Dood, its been awhile. Also, I just lost the W key to my computer so I have to actually hit the contact manually. That is all. Also I am not 17, since like 9 months ago.
Wow, is all I can say. I dont think Ive ever seen a more off tone adaptation ever. Having been reasonably entertained and pleased with the first three films, I was expecting a Alfonso Cuory-ish representation of Goblet that skipped out on many of the unimportant details but attempted to keep the "flavor" of the imagery and put the characters in the same emotional standpoints.
This, however, was not what I got. Mike Newell's Goblet is more of a cliffnotes version of the book, giving you a 15 second clip of a scene before rushing on to the next. It reminded me forcibly of the rushed quality that I felt with Sin City, like they were just trying to include all the major events and squeeze the whole plot in without going over the pre-determined 150 minutes.
Voldemorts return could have done with an extra 50 seconds of dialogue and explanation, and the death eaters might have actually become flustered that their Dark Lord seemed to be losing control over the Priori Incantatum, instead of sitting there expressionless. Consequently it causes one to wonder wether anything etraordinary is happening when no-one seems to react at all.
I enjoyed Nevilles slight increase in plot, foreshadowing his heroics at the department of mysteries. Also, the romance side was handled decently, if maybe a bit overblown. Aside from that the only real saving grace was Jeff Rawle's touching performance as Amos when he discovers that his son is dead.
That was another infuriation, Cedric Diggory's body being returned would have been SO much better if 20-30 more seconds was given to Harry's inability to let him go. Instead I felt that Danielle Radcliffe was trying to say his line quickly and get Harry's reaction done with.
Also, Sirius has almost no part at all in this film. A rushed dialogue via the fire takes place, and thats it. No Snuffles at Hogsmeade (or a hogsmeade at all for that matter) no cave, no dog at harrys side after the ordeal in the graveyard. Nothing. This will make it difficult for the next director (hopefully Alfonso) to give Harry a relationship with Sirius before his death. At this point in the films, Harry has only met Sirius once, at the end of PoA
In short, an extra 15 minutes would have done wonders, and kept things from getting boring as well.
I find myself at a crossroads. At this point in life, I have to make a more or less permanent decision on where I want to take my career as an artist. This is all fine and dandy, until you realize that you have about two or three other things that youre also interested in, been told you have a talent for and might actually be better paths in life than the path youre already on.
So the question is, do I jump ship now? Do I choose the field that will most likely accept me? Do I go for what I love most? Do I say "Fuck y'all Im gonna go to the mountains and live among the less confusing species..."? Ok, fine, well what if I think I like design, drawing, writing and photography all about equally? I cant easily turn my back on the life I can imagine as a successful photographer, nor can I know that going for a drawing degree in lieu of a design degree will lead me to my desired career, whatever that is.
Maybe going to college at the tender and confused age of thirteen was not the best idea, not because it was too hard, or because I miss my highschool buds, but because I needed more time. Maybe I still need more time, but graduation is coming up, and Im talking to my advisor. Hopefully he can help me sort things out.
